Huawei promises it is not a threat to US national security

Huawei is not a threat to US national security, says Andy Purdy, head of security at Huawei USA. According to him, the Chinese group is no more a threat than any other foreign firm. Yet, despite the lack of hard evidence, the Trump government continues to strive on the builder. A new restriction will come into effect this Wednesday, August 14, 2019.

Despite the easing promised at the G20 in late June, Donald Trump continues to hound Huawei. "We are not going to do business with Huawei," the US president said recently, anxious to keep the manufacturer as a bargaining chip in its negotiations with China. On Wednesday, the US Congress will implement a new restriction of the Defense Authorization Act Donald Trump. From now on, Huawei's network equipment will be banned from the US market.

Huawei is no more a threat than Nokia and Ericsson

Andy Purdy, the man in charge of security at Huawei USA, quickly stepped up to denounce sanctions imposed by Washington, reports CNBC. "There were no tangible charges against Huawei for cybersecurity," said Andy Purdy. As a reminder, Donald Trump accuses Huawei of working with the Chinese intelligence services and placing backdoors in his equipment.

According to him, Huawei is no more a risk to US national security than Nokia or Ericsson, two of the world's leading network equipment providers. In the interview, the man recalls that the two firms, rivals of Huawei in the telecom infrastructure market, also maintain close ties with China.

According to Purdy, the United States should therefore be more cautious when trading with most foreign firms. Trading with Huawei would not be more dangerous than doing business with any other firm. In order to provide guarantees to its partners, Huawei even tests "the products of all its suppliers according to international standards". Be that as it may, it is likely that Donald Trump will not lift the sanctions against the builder until the trade war with China turns in favor of the US.
