Huawei: ARM does not let go of the firm, SoC Kirin are not dead

ARM does not give up Huawei. The British holding ensures that the design of its hearts and architectures escape the restrictions imposed by Donald Trump last May. The Chinese manufacturer is therefore free to design the next generation of SoC Kirin based on ARM technologies.

In May 2019, ARM was forced to surprise its relationship with Huawei following the decree promulgated by Donald Trump. This law prohibits a list of Chinese companies from using American technologies. Fearing that its licenses are based more than 25% on technologies from the United States, ARM has preferred to end its collaboration with the Chinese group ... until recently.

Huawei: ARM will continue to collaborate with HiSilicon

The British holding company now asserts that the design of its hearts and architectures are based mainly on British technologies, report our colleagues from Reuters this Friday, October 25, 2019. "Versions 8 and 9 of ARM architectures are technologies of British origin" announces an ARM spokesperson.

"ARM can supply HiSilicon (Huawei's subsidiary) with the ARM v8-A architecture, as well as the next generation of this architecture, following a thorough review of both architectures, all of which were considered original. the spokesman. ARM licenses, though partially developed in Austin, Texas and San Jose, California, do not exceed the maximum rate of 25% set by the Trump administration.

"After evaluating Arm's products and partnering with Huawei, Arm has concluded that the patents on which its main chip design architectures are based are based on UK-based technologies and are therefore unaffected by US measurements. ARM said a few weeks ago at a meeting with Huawei officials in Schenzen, China.

In his interview with Reuters, the spokesman is a little more measured. "Arm is actively communicating with department officials about our collaboration with our partner HiSilicon, and we are confident that we respect the parameters of these guidelines" tempers the manager. For now, ARM does not seem able to say that all its future architectures can escape US restrictions. Nevertheless, the collaboration between ARM and HiSilicon seems to be well on its way.

Huawei is free to design the Kirin SoC of Mate 40 with ARM

Nevertheless, Huawei is currently free to develop its SoC Kirin based on the designs and architectures provided by ARM. At the latest news, ARM and Huawei are currently working on the successor of the Kirin 990 Mate 30. Expected in September 2020, this system on chip would be engraved in 5nm by TSMC, the Taiwanese foundry. The SoC would be based on an ARM Cortex-A77 core architecture. Not surprisingly, it will enter the market with the Huawei Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro.
